Construction of the Murray Downs Golf Course commenced in mid-October 1988 and was formally opened in March 1991.
A decision was made back in the late 80’s to design and construct a course that would attract golfers of all standards. Efforts were made to design individual holes based on specific strategies for play as they separately apply to the long hitting professional, the average player and the beginner was a masterstroke.
Course designer and project manager Ted Parslow ensured that the most important ingredient for low scoring is playing to position. Fairway shaping, mounding, bunkers, tees, lakes, and green orientation have been carefully considered so as to maximize the reward for the golfer who plays to position and where overly adventurous shots are often severely penalized if poorly executed.

The golf course is now a striking contrast to the Mallee plains that surround it, after a wide range of trees and shrubs were planted, interspersed with retained river gums in the background. These were carefully chosen for their suitability in the area and located in groups so as to frame each hole, define preferred shot direction and to provide an ever-changing vista to golfers as they proceed with their round.
The highly regarded Murray Downs Golf & Country Club is the number 1 golf course on the Murray River. The championship 18-hole course recently played host to the 2024 Ford NSW Open Tournament to rave reviews. It’s also a previous winner of Victorian PGA course of the year and consistently ranked in the Top 100 Australian courses.
